Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra was considering hanging up his boots

He has had the West Indies batsmen in knots in the ongoing ODI series but not so long ago, Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra was considering hanging up his boots out of sheer frustration at being dropped despite decent performances.

The affable spinner's nine wickets at an average of 17.00 in the ongoing series exceed the value the figures can ever suggest. Yet, Mishra lives with the dictum of his day-to-day philosophy.

"I once took seven wickets and scored a 50 against Bangladesh in a Test - and was promptly dropped in the next game," recalled Mishra.

He could have also mentioned his dramatic first year in Test cricket in 2008 when he took 20 wickets in five games against Australia and England and yet was sent to cool his heels for the entire next year.

It is not as if he has been compensated in one-day internationals. He made his ODI debut in 2003 and after just two games was banished for more than six years.

He did have his shoulder injury to contend with but he was still picking wickets by bucketful in domestic cricket.

"I wish no cricketer goes through what I have in my career," says the 28-year-old cricketer.

"But for my family who egged me on and Mr Ranbir Mahendra (Haryana cricket supremo) I would have hung my boots long ago."

Mishra is mindful that during this spell of 2008-09, Anil Kumble made a mighty return andHarbhajan Singh was still on top of his craft.

Also only one spinner is usually preferred in Tests abroad. Yet the feeling lingered that he was being unfairly treated with.

"I just let out my frustration on a cricket ball. I bowled and bowled and bowled. During matches, in nets and many a time alone. I worked on my leg-spinners, drifters, googly, variations in pace, degree of spin, everything," says an eager-faced Mishra who has nearly 400 first-class wickets to show for his 11-year toil.

Mishra was finally thrown a lifeline in the form of IPL. He was picked up cheaply by DelhiDaredevils in the first year auction in 2008 but his impressive hauls, including two hat-tricks, have ensured he could no longer be ignored so brazenly.

Yet it hurt him immensely that he wasn't part of India's World Cup squad as Piyush Chawla was preferred to him.

However, he got his break in the present series and has been impressive to the extent that legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar feels he ought to be on plane to England later in the summer.

Having learnt the bitter lessons, Mishra now believes only wickets can give him a good run in international cricket.

"Economy is alright but wickets matter more to me. There's no point in going for 0 for 45, it's better to have 3 for 50. It's good for you, it's good for team."

Says Eric Simmons, India's bowling coach, "Mishra is very confident, very aggressive. He gets a lot of drift which is always a very good sign for a leg-spinner."

Mishra's approach has helped India as many a time in the past, the middle overs were passive periods for the team. Most opposition could recover from poor starts only because there was nobody to pick wickets in the middle overs.

"Even though I can bowl three variations of googly, my stock bowl is leg-break. I feel my strength is the loop and the drift and dip which accompany it," remarked Mishra.

His 36 wickets from 10 Tests compare favourably with his idols Shane Warne (25 wickets), Muttiah Muralitharan (40) and Harbhajan Singh (38) at the same cut-off point.

Kumble alone is markedly superior at 53 wickets from 10 matches.

How to solve a problem like Gayle? - threat looms for Knights

BANGALORE: How to solve a problem like Gayle? Well, captains of opposing teams might well be singing this old number and its sounds wouldn’t be music to their ears. Eden Gardens witnessed a Gayle force transform into a Gayle storm in a dramatic change of ‘playing weather’ conditions.
The lanky, long-haired Chris Gayle, playing in his first IPL IV match, breezed through his innings to wreck havoc on the Kolkata Knight Riders and lead Royal challengers to en emphatic victory.
Gayle had struck an unbeaten 102 off a mere 55 balls with 10 fiery fours and seven soaring, searing sixers.

A stiff target of 171 for victory was achieved with ridiculous ease. The lanky West Indian has been on fire and no attack has managed to keep him quiet and no opponent has been able to defeat the Bangalore side since his arrival. After that century against Knight Riders, Gayle has had scores of 26 (Delhi), 49 (Pune), 107 (Punjab), 44 (Kochi) and 70 (Rajasthan) with the Challengers more than living up to their name.
The Kolkata, also doing appreciably well under skipper Gautam Gambhir, also have their tails up. Gambhir’s confidence levels too must have zoomed on an upward graph after being appointed as the Indian team’s skipper for the ODI series against the West Indies. Gambhir had led the team in their 5-0 victory over New Zealand last year. The selectors are believed to have been impressed by his leadership qualities.
Gambhir’s biggest challenge now will be to devise ways to conquer the rampaging Gayle, his India teammate and stand-in skipper Virat Kohli who has also been doing wonderfully well in Gayle’s company and the fleet-footed AB de Villiers.
Challengers have built their challenge around the knocks of these three in the main this season and, more importantly, to victorious effect.
Both teams are almost through to the play-offs as the teams in contention have little chance of overhauling their points tally. As such, the pressure to perform will be much less and make for a free-flowing contest. Something the likes of Gayle would enjoy immensely.
The Kolkata team’s big hitter Yusuf Pathan is yet to explode, troubled as he has been by injuries. Should he celebrate his inclusion for the Windies tour with a big one.
An even contest with some more lusty hitting is in the offing, should the weather Gods decide not to enter the fray in this match which gets underway at 4.00 p.m.
Challengers have 15 points from 11 games while Kolkata has 14 from 11 outings and occupy the third and fourth spots respectively.

'West indies are tough at home' says Dravid

Mumbai: The ongoing crisis in West Indies cricket may give Gautam Gambhir's India an edge in the five-match ODI series starting June 6, but winning in the Caribbean is far from easy. Ask Rahul Dravid, who apart from leading India to a Test series win in 2006, was part of the Indian team on the 1996-97 and 2001-02.

While India didn't extract any series-winning joy on the 1996-97 and 2001-02 tours, the Dravid-led team won the 2005-06 Test series for the first time since 1970-71. It was India's first significant series win outside the sub-continent (barring the win against Zimbabwe in 2005) since 1986.

"It is going to be a big challenge for Gauti. West Indies do play good cricket at home. We need to see what kind of team they put on the park. If they field all their top players, they are going to be a very, very competitive team. There is no doubt about it. It should be an interesting series for India," Dravid told MiD DAY on the sidelines of a promotional event at the Puma store in Bandra yesterday.

Dravid stressed on the adaptability factor. "Conditions can vary from island to island so we need a bit of adaptability. Wickets are very different in Barbados, St Lucia and Kingston. The weather changes from one island to another. Adaptability is going to be important when you play there," said the former India skipper, who went on to win a Test series in England in 2007 after his Caribbean high.

Experience
A lot of young faces from the IPL were expected to make the cut, especially after senior players like MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan were rested. But the selectors yesterday preferred players with some level of international experience. "The team has a good mix of players. A lot of them have played over 60 ODIs, so many of them are quite experienced. I see no reason why they shouldn't do well," he said.

Will the differences between the West Indies Board and its top players have a bearing on the series' outcome? "It is hard to comment on something that you are not a part of," replied Dravid. "I don't know the internal politics of the players and WICB. From the WI fans' point of view, they would obviously love to see their top players playing."

Dhoni was thinking of 2nd honeymoon, Board said rest first!

Chennai: The national selection committee took a last-minute decision to rest captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the five-match ODI series in the West Indies. It is learnt that Dhoni had not requested for a break, and was eying a second honeymoon of sorts with wife Sakshi, in the Caribbean. It is learnt that Dhoni was keen on playing three ODIs, before handing the gloves to Parthiv Patel.

"None of the senior players wrote to us or requested for leave. We realised that there are seven tough Tests (against West Indies and England) in the next three months. It's important for all our senior players to be in top fitness," chairman of selectors, Krishnamachari Srikkanth told MiD DAY.

"Zaheer, Tendulkar and Dhoni will be available for the Tests. Sehwag's availability is subject to fitness," he said, before adding: "The rest of the squad picked itself. Don't forget, this is a World Champion side."

As expected, Subramaniam Badrinath and Rohit Sharma came into the side for Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag; Ishant Sharma for S Sreesanth, while Amit Mishra was recalled to the ODI squad. Vinay Kumar and Praveen Kumar were also named in the squad for one-off T20 and five ODIs.

It's unlikely that Saha will get a game with Parthiv expected to open the batting alongside Gautam Gambhir. The decision to leave out Murali Vijay mainly came after his poor performance in South Africa.
"He was found wanting in South Africa (during the ODIs). We felt it's a better option to have Parthiv since he's an opener," said a selector. Sreesanth and Piyush Chawla were dropped for a poor World Cup showing.

"I won't return to Test cricket" Afridi says

KARACHI: Pakistan's ODI captain Shahid Afridi has ruled out returning to play Test cricket despite being urged to lead the side in all three formats of the game by former skipper Imran Khan .

Afridi decided to retire from Test cricket last year although he was named captain for the entire Test and one-day series against Australia and England.

He retired from Tests after Pakistan lost to Australia under his captaincy and since then the flamboyant all-rounder has focused on playing just one-dayers and Twenty20 cricket.

"I don't think I am the sort of player who is ideal for Test cricket. So I have no plans to make a comeback to Test matches," Afridi told reporters at a function hosted for the World Cup team.

Afridi insisted that he enjoyed playing limited overs cricket and wanted to focus on these two formats and do justice to his captaincy.

"I am thankful to those former players who believe that I should also lead the team in Test matches but I don't think I am cut out for the five-day format," he said.

Imran has said that Afridi can return to Test matches primarily as a bowler.

Afridi, however, said that he was keen to make up for his relative lack of success in batting.

"I will focus a lot on my batting on the coming tour to the West Indies because I know people want to see me scoring runs. Now even my daughter has started saying 'Baba Boom Boom out'," Afridi said.

The experienced all-rounder, who has made 320 ODI appearances said he was confident of making his mark as a batsman in the West Indies.

"Batting is one department I want to regain my form," said Afridi who last year scored two hundreds in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

Shaid Afridi accuses Indian media of negative campaign

KARACHI: Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi accused the Indian media on Monday of conducting a negative campaign against his team before Wednesday's eagerly anticipated World Cup semifinal in Mohali.

"There is so much negativity in the Indian media. There is nothing positive to watch on the channels and we are just sticking together as a team and it is just the hotel and ground for us," Afridi told the Geo News channel.

"The only answer we can give is with our performance. We will try to give 110 percent in this big match.

"Everyone knows how big a match this is and the pressures that come with it. But we will just do our best whatever the result. After the match we just want to be content in our hearts we gave our best."

Afridi also said Pakistan were considering playing their controversial fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar.

"I also want him to play but we have not taken a final decision as yet. And we have to take into consideration his match fitness and his form which we will see in the nets," Afridi said.

"We want him in such a high-profile match but we don't want him for just four or five overs, we want him to bowl his full quota of overs,"

Pakistan have not played Akhtar, who has announced his decision to retire after the World Cup, since they lost to New Zealand in the pool matches.

Afridi played down his remarks about not allowing Indian maestro Sachin Tendulkar to score runs in the semifinal.

"The Indian media has treated this negatively. There is never any doubt about Tendulkar's greatness. But if someone approaches me and asks me about him (Tendulkar) obviously as Pakistan captain I will not say we will allow him to score runs I will say we will ensure he doesn't get his 100th international century," Afridi said.

The Pakistan skipper felt the dew factor would play an important role,

"Yes, there is a lot of dew in the evenings but they are using chemicals to counter it. But it is a factor we will have to take into consideration at the toss," he said.

He also expressed disappointment at remarks from Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik about the government keeping a close watch on the players in the semifinal because of last year's spot-fixing scandal.

"I don't think he should have said such a thing at such a time," Afridi said.

Facts and figures relating to the World Cup semifinal between India and Pakistan

Facts and figures relating to the World Cup semifinal between India and Pakistan slated to be held at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday.

Head-to-head record: Pakistan lead 69-46 (NR: 4)

In the World Cups: India lead 4-0

In the sub-continent: Pakistan lead 34-25 (NR: 3)

Results in last five head-to-head ODIs: 14 Jun 2008: Pakistan won by 25 runs at Dhaka 26 Jun 2008: India won by six wickets at Karachi 2 Jul 2008: Pakistan won by eight wickets at Karachi 26 Sept 2009: Pakistan won by 54 runs at Centurion 19 Jun 2010: India won by three wickets at Dambulla

* India have won all four times they have played Pakistan in the World Cups, consecutively between 1992 and 2003

* At the Punjab Cricket Association, Mohali, Pakistan lead 2-0 having won both their games in April 1999 and Nov 2007

* Pakistan (WWWLWWW) not only topped Group A but also beat West Indies by 10 wickets in the quarter-finals

* Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi leads the wickets tally with 21 wickets at an economy rate of 3.48. Umar Gul, with 14 wickets/3.86 economy, is one of the leading pace bowlers in the tournament. Part-time spinner Mohammed Hafeez has seven wickets.

* Pakistan batting has been brittle and they do not have a player among the tournament's top 25 run scorers.

* Umar Akmal (211 runs) is their leading run getter, and more will be expected from the likes of Misbah-ul-Haq (192 runs), Kamran Akmal (188 runs), Younus Khan and Mohammed Hafeez (172 runs apiece).

* Pakistan has taken the least number of catches (23) among the semifinalists and they will be looking to take the chances created by the bowlers, in the field and behind the stumps.

* India (WWLWWTW) stormed into the semifinals, stopping Australia in their tracks in the quarters. They were beaten by South Africa, escaped with a tie against England and less than convincing wins against Netherlands and Ireland.

* India have a very strong top and middle order with Sachin Tendulkar (379 runs), Virender Sehwag (342 runs) and four-time man-of-the-match Yuvraj Singh (341 runs) within the top 10 scorers in the tournament.

* The bowling, despite the spearhead Zaheer Khan's stellar performance (17 wickets), has been lacking teeth. None of the other frontline bowlers have had much impact. Yuvraj Singh (11 wickets) has compensated with his left-arm spin.

Cricket World Cup 2011 : Blue vs Green in a match that's red hot

MOHALI: A Prime Minister playing the high stakes in a desperate act of proactive diplomacy, a batting genius presented with the grandest of theatres to fashion his much-awaited 100th international ton, a knock-out match where the pitch is merely a surrogate for battlefield, where the outcome could induce either agony or ecstasy in either nation - this is not just the 2011 ODI World Cup semifinal between India and Pakistan, this is simply the biggest game cricket can conjure. ( Read: Fans bat big for men in blue ) ( Read: Chacha cricket arrives in trademark style )

Special Coverage: India vs Pakistan Semi Final

Peaceniks may be disappointed but for most fans on either side of the border, it doesn't really matter whether PM Manmohan Singh's initiative, a parallel event to the nerve-jangling game, takes off or not. ( Read: HC judges lose tickets to SC seniors ) ( Read: Pakistan's glitterati arrives for good cricket )

Diplomacy has the option to fail; the cricketers do not. Both MS Dhoni and Shahid Afridi have a crushing weight of expectations on their shoulders. Winning isn't important; it is the only thing. ( Read: 'We'd rather share tickets with our hosts' )

Most experts believe India are odds-on favourites. Pakistan have looked an ominous unit in their recent games but their primary strength, spinners, may not find the going easy against the Men in Blue.

Raina seems to have filled the last piece in the Indian batting jigsaw. The man in form, Yuvraj Singh will be playing before his home crowd. And there's something reassuring watching Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag go out to bat together.

It should be a memorable match. Here's hoping its outcome incites the longest late-night party in Indian cricket.
